Why does a select statement rollback?

Hi,

Yesterday in one of the BI development server, the application user killed a session since it was running for more than 2 days. Then it went for rollback and was running for very long time. When I did a dbcc inputbuffer(sessionid) I found it was a select query. Why does a select query needs a rollback?
