in deadlock report does mode=x mean index, table, or key?

Reading a deadlock report when the resource-list reports mode=x, is that an exclusive lock on the entire index (or table?), or just on a particular key?

Up in the process list sections, both sides report waitresource=key locks.

Thanks,

Josh
