Database not attached at startup?

I had a very strange situation this morning. The computer that the SQL Server is on was shut down over the weekend, and everything shut down properly. It is running on Windows 2008 R2, and SQL Server is SQL Server 2008 (10.0.5500) Workgroup edition 64-bit. It was discovered that nobody could connect to the database, so I started up SQL Server Management Studio, logged in, and went to where the database is attached, and found the database in the list. However, it had nothing. No files, no properties, nothing. So I attempted to detach the database, and it said that it could not be detached, something to do with it being restored or repaired. Unfortunately, I didn't snapshot the exact error code. So then I took it offline, and I was able to detach it. Having done that, I attached it again, and everything works perfectly. The thing is, everything was working perfectly before the server was shut down as well. So what could have caused this to happen, and what can I do to make sure that this error never happens again? Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.
