Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

After opening "Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio" for SQL 2012 and trying to connect to the server I get this:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object. (Microsoft.VisualStudio.Platform.Windows Management)

Also in this window toward the bottom of the window I can click to copy the entire detailed message, which follows:
