Need a plan to "trap" intermittent blocking

Everything has been running fine for a few months then I get a phone call that everyone in a department using the same app is locked. sp_who2 shows that spid 80 is blocking at least 20 other users. dbcc inputbuffer(80) shows (select getdate()). I ask the user with spid 80 to lougout and everything starts working fine. Fortunately that was a local user not a web-based one!

I would appreciate any thoughts you have on how to handle this type of situation. Because it is intermittent I can't imagine running sql profiler full time on our production server. The result of dbcc inputbuffer is not always helpful. So once again we dodged a buillet but we have no idea when\if\where the next one is coming from.

TIA,

edm2
